My rollercoaster of emotions!


 Everyone experiences different emotions throughout a day. This week we talked about the importance of being aware of our emotions and gaining control of them so we can learn and live a healthy life!
Classes reviewed "The Zones of Regulation" by discussing what emotions we feel in each zone. We  used the following videos to help us identify the emotion(s) the character was feeling and what zone(s) they were in.

We also discussed how our emotions can affect others around us in a positive and negative way (good thoughts about us or uncomfortable thoughts about us). 
ex. If I am in the red zone and I start screaming and yelling at a friend, others might start to get a negative feeling or uncomfortable thoughts about me. 
After reviewing important social/emotional terms ( Zones of Regulation, self-regulation, self-regulation tools, emotions, expected vs unexpected behaviours), we played a Zones of Regulation game with hula hoops. 

We started off the game by standing in the hula hoop that represented the zone we were feeling in. The good news was that most students were in the green and READY TO LEARN! 
Next we used a variety of different scenarios we may experience at school, home or in our community and responded to them by moving to the zone(s) we may feel. Student were reminded that each person is unique and may experience a different emotion from their peers, dependent on the situation (ex. If I lost my favourite toy I may feel sad and be in the blue zone but my friend might feel frustrated and be in the yellow zone). Both responses are okay! 
Many students volunteered and shared their emotions with others about why they felt a certain way. Finally we talked about how we could use our tools to move from one zone to another. 
Hula Hooping Zones was enjoyed by everyone!
